This
porcelain doll’s height is: 16 ins. / 41 cm.
He has brown hair and blue eyes.
This ‘Yeoman of the Guard’porcelain doll is dressed in the
traditional red and gold uniform as worn on state occasions.
He is wearing scarlet knee breeches made of a smooth woollen
fabric. Over these he wears a scarlet tunic decorated with
gold braid and black velvet ribbon.
Yeoman
Warders or ‘Beefeaters’, as they are sometimes known, were
originally established in 1485 as bodyguards for King Henry
VII. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I a ruff was added
at the neck, in 1552, as part of the uniform. Our ‘Yeoman’
porcelain doll also has a lace ruff round his neck.
The
bodice of his tunic is hand embroidered with gold thread,
showing the crown, the rose of England, thistle of Scotland
and the shamrock of Ireland.
This
porcelain doll wears the typical black hat known as a Tudor
Bonnet. It is decorated with red, white and blue rosettes
which is so typical of a Yeoman of the Guard. He wears red
stockings with a golden garter decorated with the red, white
and blue rosettes. These rosettes are repeated on the black
leather shoes.
In
his left hand he holds the traditional pikestaff.
This
doll was actually dressed as a specially commissioned project,
but it was so much appreciated and we felt looked quite
spectacular with the red, black and gold, that we have decided
to add it to our usual range.
As each doll is individually prepared,
we cannot guarantee an exact match eg hair, eye colour and
occasionally fabric, although every effort is made to ensure
they resemble as closely as possible the Web pictures.
